Assignment #3 Movie Poster
Escape depicts the desperate tale of Sophia (Audrey Hepburn), princess of Daneland. After a war threatens to destroy the entire royal family, Sophia flees her castle in an attempt to remain alive. In order to avoid recognition, she dresses in plain clothes and travels at night. One night, a scout from the enemy spots her, and chases her into a forest until he loses her trail. As she runs through the forest, she comes to a high stone wall and follows it until she reaches the iron gate. Although she expects it to be locked, it opens easily, and she enters a old, forgotten graveyard. An uneasy feeling seizes her, but she ignores it, knowing that the graveyard is her only escape from the enemy. Tired, she lies down on an empty patch of grass sheltered by a tree. As she sleeps, two ghosts, one an old woman and the other a young woman, evaluate her. The younger ghost, Lucy (Amanda Seyfried), welcomes the presence of a new companion close to her age and insists they make her stay and become their friend. However, the older ghost, Minerva (Meryl Streep), is wary of Sophia since she is still alive, and believes she doesn't belong in a graveyard filled with the dead. Lucy convinces her to compromise, and they devise a plan to keep Sophia in the graveyard. When Sophia wakes up, she is shocked to be in the midst of ghosts. Lucy speaks gently to her, coaxing her to befriend them, but Minerva scowls at her menacingly. In her terror, Sophia flees from them, questioning from whom she should be escaping- the enemy or the ghosts. As days pass, the ghosts continue to approach her, and she runs away or ignores them.
One ghost, though aware of Sophia's arrival, evades her notice until she's drinking from the stream that runs through the immense graveyard and sees him sitting near an apple tree. His apparent disinterest in comparison to his fellow ghosts piques her curiosity, and also weary of solitude, she decides to speak to him. At first, her attempts at conversation bewilder this ghost, Rami (James Dean). His timidity soothes her own fear, and encourages her to proceed. His stiff manner begins to dissipate, and he teases her for being so scared of a couple of harmless ghosts. He explains to her the lonely existence shared by the other ghosts and him. They could not leave the graveyard and, despite its size, not many were buried there before it was forgotten. When she asks him what he does for enjoyment, he flashes her a quick grin and motions for her to follow him. They travel up a hill, and he points to a tall tree, saying that when he climbs to the top, he could overlook the entire forest and feel free.
Her friendship with Rami softens her perception of Lucy and Minerva, and she begins to respond to Lucy's offer of friendship. She revels in the peace and safety afforded to her by the graveyard. But just as she truly feels at home there, Rami discloses to her a conversation he overheard between Lucy and Minerva, in which they discussed ways they could kill Sophia in order to satisfy Lucy's wish for her to remain with them and Minerva's wish for the graveyard to remain untainted by life. Hearing this leaves Sophia horrified and hurt. However, when Rami promises to help her escape the graveyard, she's unable to contemplate the idea of leaving Rami and the sanctuary of the graveyard.
That night Sophia wakes up to a cold hand pressed against her mouth, and fingers clenching her nose closed. She struggles vainly, until Rami wrenches Minerva off of her and she runs. Lucy chases after her, throwing rocks at her with tears streaming down her face, but gives up once Sophia reaches the gate. Sophia continues to run after exiting the graveyard, too upset to heed her surroundings until she realizes she ran straight into an enemy encampment. She knows that if caught, they will execute her in front of the entire kingdom, far away from her graveyard and Rami. Desperation breaks her last shred of sanity, and she turns around until she reaches the stream, the enemy following her close behind. She jumps in, swimming quickly until the stream reaches the small opening in the stone wall. Once in the graveyard, all her energy leaves her and she begins to sink deeper into the water. Rami grabs her and drags her out, but it's too late. Sophia made her last escape. Now she's stuck in the graveyard. Forever.

Assignment #1
Through this Multimedia Editing and Design course, I hope to develop communication skills that will assist me in my future career. Photoshop has interested me for many years, and I believe this course will further my understanding of the program. I also think learning the programs in this course will be a fun challenge. My primary interests are reading and photography. I am also very interested in travel, although I haven't had many opportunities to do so yet. After graduating, I hope to work in the publishing industry, either in the art department or as a copy editor. I also plan to travel to many countries at some point, especially Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, and most of those in Europe. Someday, however distant in the future, I would like to be a young adult fiction author living in England.
